Apple Hill - Fall season - Some Ranches Year-Round

Orchards of fruits and nuts in season; some of the 55 family ranches are open to the public year round. Apple Hill also includes vineyards & wineries and forest land. Watch for cherries in May/June; other stone fruit in June/July/August; garden vegetables in summer; apples and nuts in fall; pumpkins & squash in October; Christmas trees after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Observatory - View the Stars!

The Cameron Park Rotary Community Observatory offers free viewing (donations welcomed) to the public on the campus of the El Dorado Center of Folsom Lake College, 6699 Campus Dr., in Placerville (from Highway 50, go north on Missouri Flat Road). See www.Community Observatory.com.

Hiking, Backpacking

Forest Service trails in the Sierra: Leg-stretching hikes less than one-mile include Rainbow, Tallac Historic Site, Trail of the Washoe, Forest Tree, Smokey's Lake of the Sky. Longer, more challenging are Fallen Leaf, Mt. Tallac, Glen Alpine, Clark Angora Lakes, Hawley Grade, Meiss, Echo Lake (1/2 mile to 6 miles). Call Forest Service, 530-644-6048.

Nature Hikes

Nature Center & Bookstore

Open to the public and located in the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park on Hwy 49 in Coloma. Learn more about the American River watershed, the flora , and the critters around here. American River Water Education Center

Folsom Dam -- Learn more about the American River and water conservation in a self-guided tour of the Center's displays and interactive exhibits. The Education Center brings to life the rugged canyons and life-giving waters of the American River; open free during afternoon hours on most weekdays. Sunday Breakfasts at Elks Club

Gold Rush Quartet

Every Tuesday eve, 7:15-9:45pm, this group of congenial men, ages 16-90, meet to sing as a chorus and as quartets. The number one goal is to have a fun time. Guests are invited to join in song. Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary

Much to see. Tiger exhibit, barnowl barn & flight aviary, house & cat garden for feral cats, the wild canid exhibit housing wolves, coyotes and wolf-dog hybrids, the Macaw house, and a larger cage for parrots. Tickets are $3-$4 with children up to age 4 free, 916-351-3527.

Gold Bug Park & Mine

Open last week of March thru October. Park grounds are open daily from 8:30-5pm for park use and hiking trails. Gold Bug Mine, Stamp Mill, museums and Hattie's Gift Shop are open from 10-4pm daily. Self-guided tours of the mine are enhanced by audio equipment, featuring tapes in English, German, French and Japanese. Group tours available. Grammy Winner Performance * Mary Youngblood returns to Imagination Theater. She is the first Native American woman to have received a Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album and the first Native American to have won two Grammys. The musician garnered the 2002 award for her melodic and haunting flute-playing of Beneath the Raven Moon and for Dance with the Wind.Tickets are available December 1. Story line: Belle, dissatisfied with life in her small provincial French town, constantly tries to fend off the misplaced "affections" of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Belle's father causes the two to meet. The show runs at various days & times. Wild in El Dorado County * The Big Read features Wild in El Dorado County where for two months a series of activities will be held, all connected to the Jack London book The Call of the Wild. Activities include an Iditarod runner, wolves, dogs, a Jack London impersonator, book discussions, film showings, and a community photo gallery titled: "Where in the Wild are You?" Every resident of the county is invited and encouraged to read The Call of the Wild and to participate in the activities, a partnership between the El Dorado Arts Council and El Dorado County Libraries. This spectacular evening event includes a silent auction and a live auction featuring an array of gifts and services. The fundraiser, 6:00-9:30pm, benefits the Sorpotimists' many charitable projects. Wildlife Rescue Classes * Open to the public. This new class is for children to learn about how they can contribute to protecting wild animals, 10-noon. A few baby animals may even be present.
