Apple Hill - Fall season - Some Ranches Year-Round

Orchards of fruits and nuts in season; some of the 55 family ranches are open to the public year round. Apple Hill also includes vineyards & wineries and forest land. Watch for cherries in May/June; other stone fruit in June/July/August; garden vegetables in summer; apples and nuts in fall; pumpkins & squash in October; Christmas trees after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Observatory - View the Stars!

The Cameron Park Rotary Community Observatory offers free viewing (donations welcomed) to the public on the campus of the El Dorado Center of Folsom Lake College, 6699 Campus Dr., in Placerville (from Highway 50, go north on Missouri Flat Road). See www.Community Observatory.com.

Hiking, Backpacking

Forest Service trails in the Sierra: Leg-stretching hikes less than one-mile include Rainbow, Tallac Historic Site, Trail of the Washoe, Forest Tree, Smokey's Lake of the Sky. Longer, more challenging are Fallen Leaf, Mt. Tallac, Glen Alpine, Clark Angora Lakes, Hawley Grade, Meiss, Echo Lake (1/2 mile to 6 miles). Call Forest Service, 530-644-6048.

Nature Hikes

Nature Center & Bookstore

Open to the public and located in the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park on Hwy 49 in Coloma. Learn more about the American River watershed, the flora , and the critters around here. American River Water Education Center

Folsom Dam -- Learn more about the American River and water conservation in a self-guided tour of the Center's displays and interactive exhibits. The Education Center brings to life the rugged canyons and life-giving waters of the American River; open free during afternoon hours on most weekdays. Sunday Breakfasts at Elks Club

Gold Rush Quartet

Every Tuesday eve, 7:15-9:45pm, this group of congenial men, ages 16-90, meet to sing as a chorus and as quartets. The number one goal is to have a fun time. Guests are invited to join in song. Hanging By a Thread chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America, Inc., fosters the excellence in the needle arts. Programs cover a wide range of stitching techniques. Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary

Much to see. Tiger exhibit, barnowl barn & flight aviary, house & cat garden for feral cats, the wild canid exhibit housing wolves, coyotes and wolf-dog hybrids, the Macaw house, and a larger cage for parrots. Tickets are $3-$4 with children up to age 4 free, 916-351-3527.

Gold Bug Park & Mine

Open last week of March thru October. Park grounds are open daily from 8:30-5pm for park use and hiking trails. Gold Bug Mine, Stamp Mill, museums and Hattie's Gift Shop are open from 10-4pm daily. Self-guided tours of the mine are enhanced by audio equipment, featuring tapes in English, German, French and Japanese. Group tours available. El Dorado County Historical Museum

Fountain-Tallman Museum

Survival Group Meets * The Friends for Survival is a national organization with a chapter locally that offers a support group for people who have been affected by a death caused by suicide.
The local chapter is facilitated by Susan Salluce, with an M.A. in counseling psychology and is a certified thanatologist (a specialist in death, dying and bereavement). Group meetings are the first Monday of every month at 7pm in Shingle Springs. For more info: 530-306-2787.

Trail Hike & Preview * Join the American River Conservancy on this hiking fundraiser to assist in completing specific aspects of a newly-developed trail not yet open to the public. An easy-moderate hike about 8 miles traverses the west ridge of the Cronan Ranch down to the South Fork American River. See beautiful views of the Coloma-Lotus Valley and the river canyon, mixed oak and conifer woodlands and peeks of the lower American River gorge. Just upstream from Satan's Cesspool (rapid), the trail leads into mixed chaparral-coverd slopes, then back into beautiful blue oak woodland, recently acquired by ARC. Coup de grace is emerging onto the lengthy ridge viewpoint giving a panoramic view of the upper Folsom Lake and Sacramento Valley. Trail Hike & Preview * Join the American River Conservancy on this hiking fundraiser to assist in completing specific aspects of a newly-developed trail not yet open to the public. An easy-moderate hike about 8 miles traverses the west ridge of the Cronan Ranch down to the South Fork American River. See beautiful views of the Coloma-Lotus Valley and the river canyon, mixed oak and conifer woodlands and peeks of the lower American River gorge. Just upstream from Satan's Cesspool (rapid), the trail leads into mixed chaparral-coverd slopes, then back into beautiful blue oak woodland, recently acquired by ARC. Coup de grace is emerging onto the lengthy ridge viewpoint giving a panoramic view of the upper Folsom Lake and Sacramento Valley. Trail Hike & Preview * Join the American River Conservancy on this hiking fundraiser to assist in completing specific aspects of a newly-developed trail not yet open to the public. An easy-moderate hike about 8 miles traverses the west ridge of the Cronan Ranch down to the South Fork American River. See beautiful views of the Coloma-Lotus Valley and the river canyon, mixed oak and conifer woodlands and peeks of the lower American River gorge. Just upstream from Satan's Cesspool (rapid), the trail leads into mixed chaparral-coverd slopes, then back into beautiful blue oak woodland, recently acquired by ARC. Coup de grace is emerging onto the lengthy ridge viewpoint giving a panoramic view of the upper Folsom Lake and Sacramento Valley. The hike continues to Acorn Creek, Skunk Hollow parking lot where a bus shuttles the group back to hikers' cars at the trailhead. Fit 10-year-olds to adults welcome. Rain or shine, 9-2pm. Crab Feed * 26th annual El Dorado Searach & Rescue Council event with no-host cocktails, raffle, auction, music and dancing. Enjoy salad, clam chowder, bread, crab, dessert, coffee.
